This is my niece's favourite book series that she wanted me to read so I had to give it a go. Sutherland writes an interesting world and the bones of some good political intrigue even if it is squarely aimed at middle schoolers. I was surprised just how violent the series is. It's almost out of step with how simple the moral conflict and resolutions were so that the intended audience can grasp it.
