A great overview from the top-up marketing campaigns that I experienced (in part) as a kid, not just about Pokémon, but also its competitors at the time. Pokémon, Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh! are the main focus, though others such as Mon Colle Knights and Medabots get more than passing mention. I enjoyed all that's in it, since it tied together a lot of nostalgic elements from my childhood. I do wish the writer had gone into more detail about many of specific trends and marketing campaigns covered. As someone who's not from America, there's of course an international element missing to truly encompass my own experiences. The book, for example, talks about the big initial Pokémon hype petering out. That makes me wonder whether our own flippos gave it a longer lease on life here.

I gained a new appreciation for statistics, even though I was skeptical of some the conclusions the authors reached. This skepticism seems to be validated, looking at other reviews.<br/><br/>Even if not all conclusions are justified, they still are interesting and thought-provoking angles. My way of viewing the world, alas, has not been redefined.

Seemed like a decent, if slightly sensationalized, overview of the early space race.

A fun ride with some interesting concepts. True, there's plenty of cringe-worthy stuff, but fortunately it's spaced out enough to not be too bothersome.

This book seems to me an excellent source for Greek mythology. The author is clearly passionate about the subject, and knowledgeable enough to give the book a clear structure. The introductions to the larger stories discuss the various authors who adapted the story, and how she selected from those authors while writing her own, making sure that the reader knows more than just the basic story itself.<br/><br/>A small chapter about Norse mythology is tacked on to it, Mythology would be a better work without it. Other important works of mythology are equally missing, so I do believe it fails as an overview of mythology. Nonetheless, the treatment of Greco-Roman mythology forms the meat and bones of this book, and it is top-notch. Just skip the chapter about Norse mythology.

A solid read marred only by sloppy historiography, including the perpetuation of a myth that was long-disproven by the time the book was written.

I wasn't really sold on the setting of the sequel series while watching The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. To me it seemed that by the start of TFA, the galaxy had pretty much been brought back to square one for no good reason.<br/><br/>This book provides that good reason. <br/><br/>The moment this book fully hooked me was <spoiler>when after setting up Casterfo as a right-wing politician collecting what is essentially Nazi militaria, he turns out to be an undoubtedly good guy and a very likable character.</spoiler>.

This book was recommended to me as “Romeo & Juliet in space” and I was rather hesitant to read it. I shouldn't have been. Like Gray's other book Bloodline, this was probably one of the best Star Wars books I have read so far.

While I would have preferred to see Claudia Gray handle the character of Padmé, Johnston still delivered a fairly competent character study. It neatly ties in with <i>Princess of Alderaan</i>. The actual plot is perhaps a tad too dull.

The time spent with Saw Gerrera is pretty engaging, but afterwards the book seems to lose momentum. The remaining plot is pretty episodic.

The first half was pretty fun to read and offered a neat balance between slice-of-life and the experience of working at Disney World. The second half, however, was as much of a slog to read as I imagine it was for Amber to write.
