This book exposed the network of communication surrounding us all, the invisible world we inhabit and are a part of whether we realize it or not. This was a huge middle finger to Descartes, and for that the book deserves love and attention. However, the author discussed the myth of the "alpha" wolf as if it were fact, and it made me hesitant about the rest of the book.
Never has a book kept me in such suspense. Surely there will be a payoff for the horrors that our cast went through! And there was, but it ended up being only a footnote in their ordeal, an ordeal centered around their relationships with one another. Reading Dracula has not left me with a greater fear for the world, but instead a greater hope that I can find those who will take on the world with me. Also highkey offended that the Texan died
Mentions a lot of beguines and the different ways they lived, but doesn't dive super deep into any of their philosophical views. It's more of a history book than I thought when I first got it. It's good for what it is, if not a little boring. I would still recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the beguines for the first time, though.
No point in rating what amounts to an unfinished outline. Unfinished or not, though, this was a great introduction to Hölderin. Modernity has proposed to us a riddle: "where will you find a community?" But rather than looking into past epochs, into dead matter, Hölderin asks us to look into what can spring from now and become the future.

I couldn't let this book go. A very fun and beautifully done modern twist on the Gothic genre. The nature of the contempt then disgust you feel toward the family (minus Francis ❤️) transforms as the book progresses, yet it never ceases to feel realistic, even with the introduction of supernatural elements. Perhaps it's because families with the same sensibilities as the Doyles exist in real life, and would surely enact the same horrors if it were possible.

Illan's insistence on adopting a vocabulary that reflects the true nature of Israel's actions is refreshing and seems to have gained much ground since the release of this book. Although, "ethnic cleansing" has been rightly replaced with "genocide" in people's vocabulary. I would've liked to have read accounts from Palestinians in a book titled "On Palestine."
