<div>Great way as a first generation Asian American to reflect on our generational trauma, alongside our families and finding the proper way to work through the wide array of these feelings and finding out "home." Highly recommend reading through this book and taking the time to explore your feelings and thoughts during the pit-stop moments.</div>
<div>Not going to rate this book, but the translation leaves it feeling soulless and with no direction. The amount of mentioning "Father" and "Uncle" but with no real names or anything to draw attachment leaves the characters feeling exactly like that, just characters, not people.<br><br>The only positive takeaway I could feel was a kinship with the writer in not understanding simple things like why her father wanted to have her college photo to put on the wall. It was an act of showing that his sacrifices and work was worth it for a better life for his children.</div>
<div>It's tough to separate the stories and horror that you've heard about David Chang from this book. While one can hope that he's slowly figuring himself out, the chili oil antics, the temper, all paint a picture of a man that seems to be more worried about keeping a clean refreshed image versus truly looking inward.</div>

<div>I wanted to love this book, but the family is so unlikeable. You're holding your breath, wincing, feeling the second hand embarrassment and anxiety, just for the hole to get deeper. I wish that there was more resolution, instead of a feeling of floating in nothingness, but maybe that's how we're supposed to feel so that we can mirror the family members.</div>
