I've had the honor of meeting Charity on a few occasions, as she and my wife are friends from childhood. She is the warmest, kindest person I've ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with. To read her stories in this book; at any time heartwarming and heartbreaking, harrowing and inspiring, I felt no sense of hyperbole. Every anecdote rings true.

You may think a woman in her early thirties may not have enough life to live to warrant a substantial memoir. You would be wrong. Ms. Tilleman-Dick has lived more in her 30+ years than many septuagenarians. She has stared death in the face and, regardless of her tribulations, has come through on the other side with a beautiful, beaming smile on her face.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough; not simply because I count her as a friend, but because it's genuine, well-written, and it made me weep openly on the train to work multiple times!

This book has two voices, and they're not talking to each other

Kadlec's memoir is one that I'm glad I read, though not one I felt like I needed to read, after I finished it. Maybe it's because I share some of the same experiences, but it felt like there wasn't a lot of new ground being broken.

The first half of the book reads very academically, as she lays out context for her experience. The second half feels more stream of consciousness. Neither format is offputting, but the sudden switch is a bit jarring.

Overall, I'd have given it 3.5 stars if possible.
